Why Are Standard Spring Mattresses Uncomfortable?

Where have the old cotton and wool mattresses gone?

Since the mid-20th century, the mattress culture has shifted, and the “spring” — the core component of most mattresses — became highly popular when first introduced. At that time, traditional wool mattresses made entirely of natural and healthy materials were considered outdated, and this new technology quickly dominated the mattress industry.

Springs can be used effectively to enhance comfort if combined with the right materials and used carefully. However, if a mattress consists only of springs and cheap foam to reduce costs and keep prices low, it cannot provide healthy sleep. A standard spring mattress made of just springs, foam, and fiber cannot evenly distribute body pressure or fully support the body. Over time, this leads to painful and restless sleep. When you press on the mattress, it pushes back, forcing you to constantly adjust your position. This often results in tossing and turning multiple times per night, waking up fatigued and unrested. For this simple reason, ordinary spring mattresses are often uncomfortable and even unhealthy.

Main Reasons Spring Mattresses May Not Suit Everyone:

·        Without natural materials like wool and cotton, spring mattresses can build up static electricity in the body, causing discomfort.

·        In humid regions or for individuals with rheumatism, springs may exacerbate joint and muscle pain.

·        Spring mattresses can disturb partners, as movement and pressure from one person affect the other. Lack of natural material to neutralize stress and static may even contribute to tension or arguments between couples.

·        Synthetic fabrics used on spring mattress surfaces prevent proper heat regulation during sleep, potentially causing back pain and sleep irregularities.

Conclusion:
Mattresses should always include natural materials, or alternative options like spring-free Visco, latex, wool, or organic mattresses should be preferred for better comfort and healthy sleep.
